Azarja van der Veen Interview

How did you get started modeling?

I started modeling when I was 16, doing mostly runway and fashion work. But when I was 18, my agency dropped me because I was getting "too many tattoos". Oddly enough, now I get most of my modeling jobs because of my tattoos!

What excites you about modeling?

The thing that excited me most about modeling is that you can be anyone for that one photo. Every time you step in front of the camera, you get to try on an alternate personalty for a little while. And I think it's also a bit larger than life in some ways. With all the composting and post production work that can go into photographs these days- you can achieve things that would never regularly be possible. I always get a little bit of a rush when I get to see the finished product.

Do you come from a background of training in the arts?

I have been an artist my entire life. My grandmother was an amazing oil painter, and she had me sketching from the minute I could hold a pencil. So I grew up drawing, painting, sculpting, making my own clothes and taking many classes to teach me different mediums and avenues to be creative in. I'm incredibly fortunate to come from a family where art is not only admired, but encouraged.

What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?

I really enjoy modeling in all types of outfits, but I think my favorite will probably always be Pin Up inspired clothing. They're so classic and beautiful, and made especially to flatter a woman's curves- you can't help but feel sexy in them!

What are your least favorites?

My least favorite thing to model in would have to be nothing at all! Shooting nudes is always a little nerve racking because you're worrying about every little flaw and how they're going to look on camera. The positions that you have to twist your body into are usually pretty uncomfortable- but the look totally natural in the photo. It's crazy how that works!

What is it about Tattoos that intrigues you?

The thing that intrigues me about tattoos the most is their ability to change someone's life. Not only are they your own personal artwork- but they're also like a badge of honor. They can completely alter the way you see yourself and your body. I feel like I get closer to the person that i was always supposed to be with each tattoo I get. And I feel more and more comfortable in my own skin because of them.

Are there any other creative mediums you work in?

I've been a full time tattooer for just over 8 years now. It's the best job in the world. I truly cannot imagine my life without it. Not only do I get to create art for a living- but I also get to be part of someone else's story. Even though we only spend a short time together, my work will forever be a part of them. It's pretty awesome.

It's especially fun when my tattooing career and modeling career cross paths. I'm Miss September in the 2012 Sailor Jerry calendar- which is not only exciting as a model- but it's also pretty cool as a tattooer.

What kind of music do you like?

I really appreciate all genres of music- however my favorite has gotta be rock and roll. I'm a punk rocker to the core. My brother (Left Hand Graham) plays bass for Marky Ramone's Blitzkreig and has the best taste in music ever- he exposed me to so many great bands and music growing up. From classics like The Ramones, The Misfits, The Clash, The Cure, Manic Street Preachers etc. to newer bands like The Murder City Devils, Birds of Tokyo, Jesse Malin, PJ Bond, The XX, M83, the list goes on and on and on! There aren't many things that are more powerful than a really great song.

What do you like to do for fun?

In my spare time- which is not much- I like going to shows. I love listening to music live and feeling the energy of the crowd. Everyone is there for the same reason, and we all wanna have a little fun. Plus, I'm a total sucker for dancing!
